SUMMARY OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Special Education Coordinator will provide quality services to students with special education needs and their parents in their home learning setting, the community, and RCOA classes through a commitment to working alongside the parents and education team in planning and implementing student programs including special instruction and consultation/direction to general education staff (HLST’s and SEA’s, etc.).
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: An experienced and certified BC Christian teacher who would enjoy the opportunity to support families who have chosen to educate their children with special education needs in a home learning environment. Should possess training and experience in special education or a related field. Training or experience in and ability to modify/adapt general education curriculum, create IEP’s and complete special education funding justification forms.
EXPERIENCE: Experience and education related to working with children and youth who have diverse learning needs. This could include, but is not limited to ASD, FASD, Cerebral Palsy, Chronic Health Impairments, Hearing Loss, Visually Impairments, Learning Disabilities, Behaviour or Mental Health concerns, etc. Experience and/or a desire to work with designated special education students (K-12) and their families, SEA's and service providers in a home learning setting, and to collaborate with family and team members to create IEP’s
CREDENTIALS AND/OR SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be certified by the BC College of Teachers or the Office of the Inspector of Independent Schools. Ability to recognize learning challenges, prescribe remediation and evaluate student progress. Understanding of the dynamics and challenges faced by families with special needs children. Ability to function as a member of an educational team, collaborate with parents, SEA’s, general education staff, support personnel and community agencies. Strong behaviour management and positive discipline skills. Ability to be flexible and receptive to change. Experience or training (or a strong desire to learn) in reading and understanding the standardized scores and relevant details found in Ed Psych and other assessment reports.
