Superintendent of Schools

Position: Due to the retirement of the incumbent, applications are invited for the position of Superintendent of Schools for the Southeast Kootenay School District # 5. Duties to commence on July 1, 2022, or as mutually agreed.

Mission: The Mission Statement of School District 5 is: Our students will graduate with dignity, purpose and options.

Role: The Board has chosen a dual reporting structure wherein the Superintendent and the Secretary Treasurer report directly to the Board. The Superintendent is responsible for carrying out the duties as specified in the School Act Sec 22 and Regulations and in Board Policy as amended from time to time.

The Candidate: The Board is seeking a strong team-oriented leader who can enthusiastically and effectively work within our dual authority structure to fulfill the district's mission. Key attributes include: honesty, humility, loyalty, transparency, and service over self. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic and exemplary interpersonal skills, be data driven and consistently do what is best for students. Continued effective implementation of the District's Framework for Enhancing Student Learning will be a priority for the new Superintendent.

The ideal candidate will possess successful, broad-based leadership experience as a central office and school-based administrator. In addition, the candidate must, at minimum, hold a Master's degree and qualify for BC teaching certification.

The District: SD 5, Southeast Kootenay provides educational services to 5,978 students in grades K-12. The District is located in the southeast corner of the province of British Columbia bordered by Alberta on the east and the USA on the south. Most people live in the communities of Cranbrook, South Country (Baynes Lake, Grasmere, Elko, Galloway and Jaffray), Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford.

The District Office is located in the City of Cranbrook, BC (population 20,000), which boasts the Canadian Rockies International Airport, the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, the College of the Rockies, the 600 seat Key City Theatre, and the Western Financial Place recreational complex. Cranbrook is situated in arguably the sunniest part of British Columbia. Mild winters and warm sunny summers characterize this semi-arid mountain environment. Cranbrook is a major regional center serving approximately 100,000 people.
