Position summary

Working within Lalme’ Iwesawtexw (Seabird Island Community School) for the 2022-2023 school year, you will provide students

develop knowledge and understanding of concepts of physical fitness,

nutrition, personal health, and be a role model to students, inspiring

them to be active and interested in physical activity and well being.

You’ll present a wide variety of beginner to complex lessons that focus

on sports games, physical fitness techniques, motivation, and engage

students in much more than game play. You will be a member of an

interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching team, liaising with other

professionals, students, family members, and community to provide

students with holistic, culturally focused education in physical

This position involves the provision of instruction to students and

includes instruction, preparation, assessment, class management,

professional development and school meetings, community and parental

relations and adherence to all Seabird Island Community School and BC

Ministry of Education policies and procedures.

Individual contracts will govern the specific teaching assignment and number of hours.

The Salary is inclusive of all teaching duties as detailed below.

The main purpose of the Physical Ed. Teacher is to help children

develop physical abilities, healthy lifestyle habits and engage in

competitive sports.

What you’ll do

Organize and manage gym classes. Working with administrators to implement school policies and procedures,

especially around team school sports.

Plan school activities such as Sports Day and promote aspects of Personal Development related to PE.

Teach consistently, high quality lessons and work with colleagues to develop activities that link with the units of

inquiry where possible.

Lesson and Year Plan preparation.

Maintain appropriate records and to provide relevant accurate and up–to-date information for the school

assessment system.

Prioritize and manage time effectively, ensuring continued professional development is in line with the role.

Follow school policies and procedures.

Ensure the effective/efficient deployment of appropriate classroom support.

Maintain discipline in accordance with the school procedures, and to encourage good practice with regard to

punctuality, behaviour and standards of work.

Update professional knowledge and expertise as appropriate to keep up to date with developments in teaching

practice and methodology, in general, and in the curriculum area of PE.

Assess, record and report on the attendance, progress, development and attainment of students and to keep such

records as are required.

Complete the relevant documentation to assist in the tracking of students.

Communicate as appropriate, with the parents of students and with persons or bodies outside the school

concerned with the welfare of individual students, after consultation with the appropriate staff.

Apply the Behaviour policy so that effective learning can take place.

Book sports facilities (fields, lacrosse box etc.) and carry out the necessary administration as required.

Maintain and promote good working relationships with community professionals.

General duties

Develop resource packages, outlines,

and prescribed learning outcomes or as outlined by school

administration. Delivering the Minimum Instructional Hours as outlined

in the contract.

Consistently meet scheduled deadlines.

Participate in initiatives to ensure individual students have participated in mandatory school work catch-up sessions.

Participate in PLC’s when space/opportunity permits.

Mandatory attendance at staff meetings and school events.

Abiding by all policies of Seabird

Island Community School, the BC Ministry of Education, Independent

Schools Branch and Seabird Island Band.

Ensuring compliance with the Seabird Island Community School Teacher Code of Conduct.

Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by the Vice Principal, Principal, Director or the Executive Director.

What you bring

Bachelor Degree in Education with a specialization in Physical Education.

Must be a B.C. Certified Teacher or a Certified Teacher in good standing in a Canadian province

Standard First Aid and CPR.

Experience instructing physical education K-12. Strong knowledge of

health and fitness, including outdoor education with significant

understanding of sports and athletic skills.

Coaching experience in a variety of sports is considered an asset.

Possess strong leadership, public-speaking, and classroom management

skills in order to successfully instruct students in the manner in

which they should do particular activities.

Willing to organize and take students to tournaments outside of school hours.

Solid knowledge of and demonstrated

ability in addressing a wide range of academic, social, emotional and

behavioural needs of children of intermediate ages.

Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.

Knowledge and respect of Stó:lo culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.

Experience working with First Nations children and the community is considered an asset.

Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5, Class 4 driver’s license is considered an asset.
