Applications are invited for the position to assist in the financial department as an Accountant. Duties will commence as mutually agreed.


During the 2021-22 school year, Holy Family Catholic Regional Division will serve approximately 1700 students in seven schools and one cyber-high school.

The jurisdiction encompasses the geographic areas served by the towns of Manning, Grimshaw, Peace River, McLennan, High Prairie and Valleyview. The division is located in northwestern Alberta.

Division leadership is provided by seven ward trustees and two first nations appointed trustees. The division consists of four wards with Ward four divided further into four subdivisions. A wide array of programs are designed to meet the unique needs of every student. Division employs 262 certified and support staff.

The division’s operating budget for 2021-22 is approximately $31,000,000.


The division office is located in the town of Peace River, approximately 500 km northwest of Edmonton. The region is rich in natural resources; forestry, oil and gas, agriculture and tourism are among the main contributors to the economic base. Major highways afford easy access to all major centers in the division.The Area is made up of diverse landscapes and beautiful scenery providing abundant recreational

opportunities, including golfing, skiing, hiking, camping, and fishing.


The successful candidate will be highly skilled in accounting and has financial management experience.

Ideal Candidate Profile


Formal Education

? Degree or an advanced degree in business administration, finance, accounting, or a related field.

? Accounting professional designation through a recognized governing body will be an asset.


? Five years working experience in a finance or auditing role.

? Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards would be an asset.

? Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform the position may be considered.


? Demonstrated knowledge of accepted accounting standards and practices, tax laws, and reporting requirements.

? Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret goals, objectives, and policies.

? Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.

? Previous financial management experience with a school jurisdiction is an asset.

? Excellent skills in Microsoft Office or spreadsheets; Advanced EXCEL, an asset

? Well-developed interpersonal skills to maintain positive working relationships.

? Experience with PowerSchool Atrieve Financial Software is a definite asset.

? Familiarity with the not-for-profit organizations accounting principles

Duties and Responsibilities

? Ensure that all month-end financial accounting duties and all resulting financial reporting is completed in a timely and accurate manner and in accordance with generally accepted accounting standards

? Record all business transactions, process accruals and adjustments, reconcile accounts and prepare monthly accounting statements.

? Keep abreast of federal, provincial and municipal developments, laws and policies that may affect the financial operations of the organization.

? Assist in the preparation of the operating budget and annual financial statements.

? Perform financial and budget analysis and investigate variances, reporting, internal controls, and general accounting; deploy measures to resolve variances.

? Monitor budgets of all programs and provide the departmental managers with regular reports.

? Assess both accounting and administrative controls ensuring compliance with internal policies and procedures.

? Facilitate any auditing conducted by third parties to ensure effective resolution and swift closure of auditing activities.

? Take responsibility for all aspects of the internal audit function in the organization and develop auditing techniques to meet changing needs.

? Monitor applicable legislation, regulations, policies, procedures, and operations, and ensure compliance.

? Ensure that all employees of the Finance Department comply with Division policies, procedures, and ethical standards.

? Participate in financial planning activities.

? Coordinate the development of the operating and capital budgets.

? Develop and implement a fixed asset inventory control system.

? Ensure the effectiveness of employees through training, coaching, assignment of duties, discipline, and dismissal.

? Supervise and assist in the development and maintenance of accounting files and records.

? Other duties as assigned.
