Heartland Agency’s EvenStart Program offers holistic support services to children, many from backgrounds of poverty, trauma, abuse, and neglect. EvenStart provides programming that supports the growth and development of children’s social-emotional and learning needs within a centre-based setting, offering the support of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of teachers, educational assistants and therapists.

We are currently seeking a 1:1 Behaviour Support Worker for a child at our Mayland Heights location (1625 18th Street NE), commencing as soon as possible. Please note that this position is funded through Child and Family Services, and has the potential to continue as an Agency-funded position when the contract ends.

Position Details:

Working with at-risk children, many who have come from backgrounds of trauma, abuse neglect and poverty, you must be able to bring laughter, understanding, and creativity with you to work each day. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Utilize a trauma-informed lens and approach when implementing therapeutic strategies and plans

Provide 1:1 support for a child attending full-day programming

Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to develop and implement individual support plans; contribute observations and feedback to individual program plans as required

Utilize preventative interventions and de-escalating skills in individual and group situations; use crisis intervention techniques as necessary

Provide behavioural guidance and utilize developmentally appropriate practices, particularly regarding positive discipline and behaviour support

Provide support for challenging behaviours, for example, aggression (hitting, biting) unsafe behaviour (running, limited awareness of surrounding and personal safety), etc.

Organize and prepare daily plans/strategies to encourage growth and independence

Communicate child progress to parents and collateral agencies (e.g., Child and Family Services) and participate in case conferences as scheduled

Qualifications and Requirements:

2-3 years of related experience working with children with challenging behaviours; a combination of education/demonstrated experience will be considered

Experience working with children with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges is as asset

Familiarity with trauma-informed practice

Dynamic and high energy individual

Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills

Current first aid certification

Criminal record check with vulnerable sector check
